Holiday Fun!
Make a Mancala Game

Mancala is a very old game that probably originated in Africa. There are hundreds of different variations of this game, from many different countries. Mancala takes a very short time to learn, but can take a lifetime to master!
To make your own Mancala, you will need:

  • 1 egg carton
  • 48 beads (or pebbles, marbles, etc.)
  • Scissors & Glue
  • Paint, markers, or other decorations (optional)

Cut the top off the egg carton, leaving the section with the 12 cups. Cut the top in half widthwise, and glue the two halves under the four egg cups on each end. (This makes a tray on each end of the egg cups.) Put four beads in each of the twelve cups. Time to play!

Place the Mancala lengthwise between two players. Each player “owns” the tray to their right as well as the 6 cups closest to them. Taking turns, scoop all the beads from one of your own cups. Drop one bead into the cup to the right of the cup the beads were taken from, one bead in the next cup to the right, and so on. Continue dropping one bead per cup, heading to the right (counter-clockwise) direction until there are no beads left in your hand. If you reach your tray, drop in a bead and continue on. If you reach your opponent’s tray, skip over the tray and continue dropping beads one by one. The winner is the player with the most beads in her tray.

Remember, you can paint and decorate your Mancala in Kwanzaa colors (red, black, and green), or however you like!
