SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE CONGRESSIONAL SEMINAR NATIONAL ESSAY CONTEST
Sponsored by the National Patriotic Service Committee of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America

2005 Essay Title:
“Which U.S. President Serving Between 1850-1950 Do You Most Admire And Why?”

Contest open to: Students in the grades 10, 11, and 12

Essay format: Length: Approximately 500 words. Essay must be typed, double-spaced, with student’s name and home address on each page. Essay must have a cover sheet with essay title, student’s name, home address and telephone number. Title must not be changed nor topic altered.

Application form: Essay must be accompanied by the completed Washington Workshops application form (to obtain, please contact the Colonial Dame listed below), signed by student, teacher/counselor and parent/guardian, complete with photo (school picture or snapshot is fine). Both sides of the application must be completed. Note: no application fee is required by entrants as this is paid by the sponsoring organization.

How to enter: One completed application form (with picture) and two copies of essay are to be sent to the Colonial Dame listed below by the deadline of January 21. Essays are judged on the State, Regional, and National level. Winners will be notified by mail in early April by the National Consultant. Decision of the judges is final.

Prize: A week in Washington, D.C. – June 18-24!
Attendance at a Congressional Seminar Workshop planned and coordinated by The Washington Workshops Foundation. The seminar is a unique experience in the study of American national government with emphasis on the concerns and activities of the United States Congress.

Value: Approximately $950 which pays for the following expenses: Application fee, tuition, seminar materials, local transportation (for seminar activities) plus college dorm room (double occupancy), bedding, linens, and two meals daily (breakfast and dinner) at a university campus in the D.C. area.

The GSSJC History Committee is proud to present Juliette’s Tea Party

What a fun way to spend the day! The History Committee is having an old-fashioned tea party for Brownies and Juniors, and hopes you’ll come! Enjoy tea and cake and meet “Juliette Low!” You’ll also be learning about Victorian etiquette and manners and playing games typical of Juliette’s era. Attendees will also be making something special to take home.

When: Brownies: Saturday, March 12
9 a.m. – noon (Check in at 8:30 a.m.)
Juniors: Sunday, March 13
1:30– 4:30 p.m. (check in at 1 p.m.)
Where: Houston Girl Scout Center
Cost: $4 per girl (includes patch)
Bring: A willingness to have fun, Permission Slip, Medical Form, and a camera (for a photo op with “Juliette Low”)
Wear: Party Clothes or Victorian Costume (gloves and hat optional)
Min./Max: 25/125

During the event, there will be a separate program available for the leaders who wish to stay. Please drop off and pick up girls (along with their permission slips and medical forms) at the registration area.

Program Aides: Would you like to earn service hours by helping teach games, crafts or etiquette to Brownies and Juniors? Would you like to learn about some of the early activities from Girl Scouting?
