Houston Comets lock-in event

More than 850 Girl Scouts attended the lock-in event at the downtown Toyota Center on July 17. The Take Note choir and Signing Angels started off the night by performing the national anthem before the very large and vocal group enjoyed the game between the Houston Comets and Connecticut Suns (the Comets won). At the end of the game girls and leaders were treated to a special presentation by the Comets coach and coach of the gold medal winning Team USA women’s basketball team, Van Chancellor. During the break Comets mascot Haley entertained the crowd while Toyota Center staff were preparing for Girl Scouts to begin their Midnight Madness party.

Girls could participate in an array of activities around the stadium including inflatable bungee basketball, on court free throw competitions, musical chairs, face painting, basketball relays, Comets trivia games, inflatable pop a shot, and behind the scenes tours of the stadium. If the games weren’t keeping the girls active enough, the sock hop had plenty of people up and dancing.

Some of the “Take Note” choir members on a break in front of the Crystal Palace at Six Flags AstroWorld on September 11. The girls performed in three shows in the Crystal Palace and sang the National Anthem, God Bless America, and Taps at the 9/11 flag retirement ceremony at dusk on the Center Stage of Six Flags AstroWorld. The next auditions for the Take Note Council Choir will be held January 9 at 3 p.m. at the GSSJC offices in Houston.

To wind down from the night’s activities, girls enjoyed late night snacks and a movie on the large center court screens. After a scrumptious breakfast, it was goodbye to all after a very successful and entertaining event.
Special thanks to Tracy Edwards and the Toyota Center staff for hosting an excellent event!

Girls Enjoyed watching the Comets play and playing bungee basketball after the game.

Dear Cora Ann,
We just want to let you know how thrilled and delighted we were to be awarded the Family Award. It was a great surprise to both of us and we really appreciated it. Thank you to you, the Council, Deerforest Service Unit, and to Ivan’s many sailing friends at Camp Casa Mare for considering us for such a prestigious honor. We both very much enjoy our Scouting here in Houston and have happy memories of our Guiding days in England. The Scouting/Guiding program worldwide is such a wonderful program for girls, we have seen our eldest daughter become a Queens Guide and grow into a confident business woman, wife, and mother, and our youngest who just presented us with a grandson two weeks ago has also benefited from Guiding.

Thank you again for this great surprise, which is very much appreciated.

Yours in Scouting,
Sue and Ivan Burrows
