Safety has always been of paramount
importance to the Girl Scout organization

Safety has always been of paramount importance to the Girl Scout organization. Every activity or program that we do with girls or adults has rules or ways of work to ensure that everyone has fun but in the safest manner.

For that reason every New Troop Packet includes a reference book called Safety-Wise. Adult Girl Scouts can look for information regarding everything from roller-skating to fund raising and how safety pertains to each situation. During the Basic Leadership Training (BLT), this book is used by the trainer to explain to new leaders what is right and wrong for the safety of girls. Other level trainings and outdoor trainings also refer to Safety-Wise. Extra copies are available in the Girl Scout Shop, including a version that has been translated into Spanish.

The Girl Scout Research Institute has just published new findings in a brochure, Feeling Safe: What Girls Say. This takes the issue

of safety to a different level as girls from the ages of 8 to 17 have been polled to answer questions about their personal safety. The findings are very interesting. It is worth the time of any adult who works with youth to look at this information. Emotional safety is addressed as well as physical safety. There is more information concerning this research in the spring issue of the Leader, the magazine for all registered adults published by GSUSA.

GSUSA has also developed new safety programs for girls. No Way!, Don’t Go There!, and I Don’t Think So! are the new workbook type activities to use in troops. More information will be in future trainings and The Golden Link to help leaders incorporate these concepts into troop meetings.
This is an organization where we want to have fun. Please plan and think ahead so everyone will have a good time–safely.
