New volunteer positions for those who want to be innovative
by Sandee Williams

Since its beginning in 1912, Girl Scouting has responded to the changing needs of girls and their adult leaders. New program activities and resources have been developed to keep pace with today’s girls. While changes happen to better serve the girls, there must also be corresponding changes to support the infrastructure of the Girl Scout membership.

GSSJC’s membership department has developed new and fresh volunteer initiatives, designed to support and expand the services provided to our Council’s ever growing girl and adult membership. These contemporary approaches are generating excitement and creativity. They also are providing new volunteer opportunities for forward-thinking individuals who thrive on the challenge of setting innovative ideas into motion.

Perhaps you can see yourself in a spot that’s suitable for your skills and talents!

§ Membership Communications Team (MCT)
This is the perfect position for the volunteer who is looking for a place to put their journalistic skills to work. Three to six volunteers are needed to identify, research, and write membership articles for The Golden Link. In addition, the MCT will assist in editing and producing information and support for internal and external audiences that visit the membership section of our Council Web site. Opportunities to work on special promotional

writing projects will be assigned to this team also. Team meetings will be held on an as needed basis - work for this group is largely done via the magic of technology…the computer and the Internet!

§ Volunteers-4-Volunteers
One can safely predict that the adult audience attending the school recruitment rally will consist of parents and legal guardians. How do we attract other adults who may be interested in becoming Girl Scout volunteers? One solution is to form a team of experienced Girl Scout volunteers to design new and creative ways to get the Girl Scout message to adults who have never heard it. The goals of Volunteers-4-Volunteers include, but are not limited to:
– identifying and delivering recruitment presentations to young adult audiences and retiree groups,
– promoting episodic volunteer opportunities to corporate employee groups,
– finding ways to recognize corporate employees who volunteer in troop/group and episodic positions, and
– developing adult recruitment materials that appeal to targeted adult audiences such as young professionals and empty-nesters.
Volunteers-4-Volunteers is looking for 12 resourceful and outgoing volunteers who truly enjoy introducing other adults to Girl Scouting.

§Council Do-Dad Committee Team Member
The Council Do-Dad

Committee promotes and manages the Do-Dad program. The members of the core group consist of the committee chair, advisor of the program team, advisor of the communication team, advisor of the resource team, advisor of the recruitment and retention team, advisor of the education team, and advisor of the recognitions team. Exciting plans have been established and now the search is on for adult male Girl Scout members to become team members! Do you know any great Do-Dads wanting to work on the Council level?

§ Area Advisor
Adults need mentors too! The area advisor position is a great way to put your service unit administrative skills and experience to work once again. This volunteer position serves as support to the area membership manager for the success of Girl Scout operations in assigned service units. The area advisor will support the work of the service unit administrators by advising, mentoring, and coaching!

§ Membership Volunteer Coordinator
In partnership with the director of membership initiatives, you’ll develop and implement innovative processes to increase the number of adult volunteers and volunteer opportunities throughout the Council.
