A Celebration of Freedom

Girl Scout & Boy Scout Day at Six Flags Astroworld

Saturday, September 11, 2004

Prior to the event, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are asked to collect flags in their neighborhood that are worn or tattered, and are no longer fit to fly as a symbol of our nation. Flags may be brought to Six Flags AstroWorld on the day of the event or taken to any Girl Scout Service Center through September 6. (Boy Scouts should contact the Sam Houston Area Boy Scout Council for drop off locations.) In accordance with the United States Flag Code, these flags will be retired in a patriotic ceremony.

At 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 11, an honor guard of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will host the Flag Retirement Ceremony at Six Flags’ Center Stage.

ix Flags AstroWorld theme park is closing its gates to the public and reopening them up just for GIRL SCOUT & BOY SCOUT
DAY! This day is full of fun and excitement when Girl Scouts and their friends and family can go on their favorite rides and see special exhibits and performances by Girl Scout and Boy Scout groups. The Green Starlettes drill team, Take Note choir, and others provide entertainment for this family fun event. The date is Saturday, September 11 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. You won’t believe at how inexpensive these tickets are at only $18 plus tax. To be a part of the action, purchase your tickets in advance at any of the Girl Scout Shops or through Six Flags mail order.

Essay Competition

Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts may submit a one-page essay on the topic “What does freedom mean to me?” First, second, and third place winners will be selected from girls and boys in each of two age groups: ages 5-10 and ages 11-17. Finalists will be notified prior to Girl Scout & Boy Scout Day and asked to read their essays at Six Flags’ Center Stage during the awards ceremony. Look for more information about the essay competition in the event mailing from Six Flags AstroWorld or on the July CIN at www.gssjc.org.

How You Can Help?

Organize your troop or group and begin collecting United States flags that should be retired. Help educate people in your community about the proper way to dispose of a flag once it is too worn to fly. If possible, learn the history of each flag you collect – did it fly anyplace special?

Host a Ceremony

Only one flag, symbolic of all the others, will be retired on September 11 at Girl Scout & Boy Scout Day at Six Flags AstroWorld. After the event, troops, groups, and service units will be needed to assist in retiring the flags collected from the community.
