Committee selects
Kathleen Kimball-Baker
to speak at MDC 2004

by Tab Kennedy, MDC chair

The 2004 Membership Development Conference Committee is proud to introduce Kathleen Kimball-Baker as its keynote speaker, a woman who will reinforce “why” staying involved in the lives of our youth is a must. MDC 2004 will be July 23 and 24 at the Woodlands Marriott Houston. All adult volunteers are invited to attend.

Mother, author, speaker, advocate for youth issues are all attributes describing MDC 2004’s keynote speaker Kathleen Kimball-Baker.
Kathleen is the director of publishing for Search Institute, a national nonprofit organization that provides practical research, tools, and training to individuals, initiatives, and organizations who are using a strength-based model of youth development to improve the lives of children and youth and change their communities.

A graduate of the University of Texas, Austin, Kathleen also received professional development at Stanford University. She has been an award-winning reporter, editor, and publisher in newspaper, magazine, and book publishing for more than 26 years. In her community, Kathleen has served on a district-wide Parent Advisory Council to Minneapolis Public Schools and on the steering committee of her Neighborhood Revitalization Program initiative, advocating for youth issues. She has been interviewed on television and radio programs that focus on community and family topics.

Kathleen believes it is through relationships with many caring, principled adults (and not just parents) that young people build the strengths, skills, and resiliencies they need to succeed. She also is convinced far too few young people and adults connect at all, let alone connect in meaningful ways.

As a speaker, Kathleen attempts to inspire the audience to see their power to connect with young people day-to-day in easy ways that anyone can do. She shows that you don’t have to be an expert in youth development to build relationships that matter to young people. The Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets are the basis of Kathleen’s message. These assets will be a focus at MDC 2004.
