BASIC WATER RESCUE
(Ages 11 and up and adults)
This course provides the information and skills necessary to prevent, recognize, and respond to water emergencies using non-swimming rescues. Proper techniques to care for possible head, neck, or back injuries will be covered. This course prepares you for water emergencies by teaching you how to protect yourself while assisting others. Portions of the Water Sports Interest Project are covered. This course will NOT provide you with the information needed to be a certified lifeguard. It is a class for those desiring to become certified pool watchers. It is the course recommended by Safety-Wise.

PREREQUISITES:

  • Be comfortable in shallow water to do practical skills.
  • Purchase and read ARC Basic Water Rescue, a few loaner books will be available at camp

WATER RAT RESCUE
(Girls ages 11-14)
Do you want to learn what it takes to become a lifeguard? Do you want to be prepared when you are old enough to really be a lifeguard? How about learning the skills necessary for entry to the ARC Lifeguard Training course, communication and decision making skills, and the basic responsibilities of a lifeguard? Swimming skills, self-rescue skills as well as first aid and CPR information is included. A Basic Water Rescue, First Aid, and CPR certificates will be issued at the completion of the course. Portions of the Water Sports interest project may be earned. Does not give participants certification to be a lifeguard or ARC learn to swim certificate.

PREREQUISITES:

  • Completed 6th grade
  • Swim front crawl 25 yards continuously while breathing to the side
  • Tread water for one minute using arms and legs
  • Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater

LIFEGUARD TRAINING
(Girls ages 15 and up and adults)
This is the course for adults to take in order to take girls swimming at pools or at lakes, beaches, or the bay. This will fulfill the requirements for Level 1, 2 or 3 Lifeguard. This course includes the updated material and new modules. It focuses on the job of the lifeguard in a swimming pool environment. The Waterfront Lifeguarding module will be included if time and weather cooperates. The course will teach victim recognition, surveillance, equipment based rescues, spinal injury management, and includes first aid skills as well as rescue breathing, choking, CPR for infant/child, adult as well as two person CPR, alternate airway management and the use of a pocket mask. The modules use an AED and teach prevention of disease transmission.

PREREQUISITES:

  • Swim 500 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order: 200 yards front crawl stroke with rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick; and 100 yards breast stroke and 200 yards using either the front crawl stroke using rhythmic breathing or breast stroke.
  • Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breast stroke, surface dive to depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 lb object, return to surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object in both hands and keep his/her face above the water.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING REVIEW
(Girls ages 15 and up and adults)
This class reviews victim recognition, surveillance, equipment-based rescue, spinal injury management, and include first aid, rescue breathing, choking, CPR for infant/child, and adult and two person CPR, and alternate airway management. Included will be the updated materials as well as the modules of PDT (preventing disease transmission) and AED (automated external defibrillator). It will update your current unexpired Lifeguard Training and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificates. You MUST have an unexpired Lifeguard Training certificate to participate.
