SLOOP SKIPPER and
PERFORMANCE SAILING

(girls ages 11 and up with proper sailing rating and service hour prerequisites)
This class will enhance training for those Mariners who have completed previous ratings and service hours who wish to become a skipper on the small sloops based at camp. The Performance Sailing rating will enhance the principles of sailing and its components. Girls will learn more about navigation and weather. Charting a course will be one challenge. While earning Sloop Skipper, you will expand on your skills while learning your responsibilities of skippering your ship.

  • Sunfish Mate Rating, Sailing Fundamentals Rating, Sloop Crew Rating
  • Texas Boaters Education Course
  • GSSJC Program Aide Core
  • 20 hours of service to the Sailing Program
  • ARC Level IV swim card, equivalent, or better
  • GSSJC Safe Boating Test

SLOOP CAPTAIN
(Girls ages 11 up with proper sailing rating and service hour prerequisites)
This class will enhance training for those Mariners who have completed previous ratings and service house who wish to captain one of the camp based sloops. This rating is a prerequisite for many other ratings. While earning Sloop Captain, you will expand on your sailing skills while learning how to fly the boats Spinnaker.

PREREQUISITES:

  • Sloop Skipper Rating
  • 30 hours of service to the Sailing Program
  • ARC Level IV swim card, equivalent, or better
  • GSSJC Safe Boating Test

BIG BOAT CREW RATING and SAILING FUNdamentals RATINGS (Girls ages 11 and up)
This class will begin training for Mariners of for those who have satisfactorily completed ARC Basic Sailing or GSSJC Seaman Rating or ARC Small Craft Safety-Sailing who wish to become more proficient on sailboats such as the big keeled boats or sloops based at the Marina off camp. These two ratings are the prerequisites for many other ratings. The Sailing FUNdamentals Rating will reinforce the sailing theory learned in Basic Sailing adding a variety of other topics of interest to the sailor wanting to expand their sailing knowledge and abilities. The Big Boat Crew Rating will let the Mariner work on perfecting their skills while crewing on the “big boats” (keeled sloops) as well as learning how to do simple maintenance.

FIRST MATE and
PERFORMANCE SAILING

(Girls ages 11 and up with proper sailing rating and service hour prerequisites)
This class will enhance training for those Mariners who have completed previous ratings and service hours who wish to learn to sail the large sloops or fixed keeled boats. These two ratings are the prerequisites for many other ratings. The Performance Sailing rating will further enhance the principles of sailing and its components. You will learn more about navigation and weather. Charting a course will be one challenge. While earning the First Mate rating, you will learn how to maneuver and crew/skipper a large keeled boat, putting your new navigational information into practical experience.

PREREQUISITES:

  • Big Boat Crew Rating, Sailing Fundamentals Rating
  • Texas Boaters Education Course
  • GSSJC Program Aide Core
  • 10 hours of service to the Sailing Program
  • ARC Level IV swim card, equivalent, or better
  • GSSJC Safe Boating Test

RATINGS COMPLETION
This day is for participants who have not completed the basic sailing or Sunfish Mate sailing ratings from either Casa Mare resident camp 2004 or the Spring 2004 sailing season. Only sailing skills will be checked off.
PREREQUISITES:

  • Passed written exam with grade of 80% or better
  • Passed all knot criteria
  • Passed the rectangular course criteria
  • ARC Level IV swim card or equivalent or better (girls)
  • GSSJC Safe Boating test

BRING: Copy of swim cards and Safe Boating Test certificate, form from sailing director/instructor with requirements not completed listed, lunch and cold drinks, permission slip, and medical form.

TASTE OF RACING
Sailing Racing that is!
(Girls 12 and up with Sunfish Mate rating)
This is a NEW course designed to introduce girls to the sport of racing sunfish at Camp Casa Mare. You will learn the details on how to participate in a race from rigging the sailboat, to figuring out how to round the marks (buoy), the rules and regulations of sailing and how to cross the finish line a winner!

PREREQUISITES:

  • GSSJC Sunfish Mate Rating
  • GSSJC Sailing FUNdamentals Rating
  • ARC Level IV swim certificate or better or equivalent
  • GSSJC Safe Boating Test Certificate
