The Golden Link - January 2004 Volume 30 Issue 1

The Fund Development/Brand Management Department solicits donations from corporations, foundations, and individuals to assure that Girl Scouting is available for all girls and to provide financial means for Girl Scout programs.

Supporters may honor others in Girl Scouting in several ways: donations to one of the Council's many funds, an engraved brick on the Promise Path at Camp Agnes Arnold, or a plaque at Camp Casa Mare. Women may join The Emerald Circle, a social and service group, which supports Girl Scouting through its membership fees.

Donate on-line to any of the Council funds at www.gssjc.org.

Non-profits join forces to sow seeds of philanthropy among Hispanics

by Tami De La Fuente

Several non-profit organizations, including Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC), collaborated on a forum to build an awareness of the need for philanthropy in the Hispanic community and among Hispanic leaders. The forum was held November 14 at Houston Community College.
“Mobilizing Philanthropic Resources in the Hispanic Community: Dealing From Strength,” provided non-profit staff, board members, business leaders, and elected officials with a blueprint for developing philanthropic leaders among successful Hispanics.
GSSJC has been collaborating with the United
Way of the Texas Gulf Coast, the YMCA of Greater Houston, Houston Community College and the Mexican American Educational and Legal Defense Fund to bring a greater awareness to the importance of giving of time, resources, and money to philanthropic endeavors.
Henry A. J. Ramos, a principal of Mauer Kunst Consulting and the event’s keynote speaker, has written extensively on organized philanthropy and serves as executive editor of Arte Publico Press’s Hispanic Civil Rights Book Series: a multi-volume series that seeks to expand public appreciation of Hispanic
contributions to civil and human rights. Ramos is the founding editor of the Harvard Journal of Hispanic Policy and has served as board treasurer of Hispanics in Philanthropy, the nation’s largest organization of foundation trustees and executives committed to addressing Hispanic issues and causes.
GSSJC administers a program developed to build Girl Scout ambassadors in the Hispanic community. Latinas Taking the Lead is an intense, six-month leadership offering that teaches teamwork, public speaking skills, management theory and practice, and business writing skills.

GSSJC hosts Power of a Promise breakfast

The third annual Girl Scout Power of a Promise Breakfast, sponsored by Halliburton, was held this year on November 20 at the Junior League of Houston at 1811 Briar Oaks Lane. Guests heard testimonials from Girl Scouts and volunteers describing the power Girl Scouting has had in their lives, and Mary Vitek outlined the exciting new directions Girl Scouts are moving in for the 21st century.
Fund Development Manager Iska Koontz sends a special thank you to volunteers who braved the early morning traffic to be with GSSJC at 6:15 a.m!
