First Learning Boards delivered in Afghanistan
Girls make a difference in the world

by Evelyn Vittone

The first shipment of Learning Boards made by Girl Scouts was hand delivered during September 2003 by a representative for WWW United, Inc. to school children in Kabul, Afghanistan.
During the past year, over 2,000 boards were painted at troop meetings, service unit weekends, and Council events. Thanks to the Girl Scouts throughout the Council, many more schools will be receiving the board and chalk/sock sets in the future.
In addition, Girl Scouts came to Six Flags AstroWorld on Saturday, September 27 loaded with socks and chalk to donate to children overseas through WWW United, Inc. Over 1,500 girls donated socks and 6,600 pieces of chalk. The socks will be used as erasers with the Learning Boards.

Girls respond
The Learning Board project was displayed to service unit delegates at the fall Council meeting on Saturday, October 19 at Camp Agnes Arnold and that next week another 300 boards were distributed to troops for painting.
Girl Scout troops are asked to make small blackboards, called Learning Boards that are a lot like the slates used in the pioneer days. WWW United will distribute your troop’s Learning Boards
to schools in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq. With the Learning Boards children who have no paper or pencils can learn to write and do arithmetic with the help of their teachers.

More boards still needed

Children overseas need more board sets, (learning board, sock, and chalk). Consider being a part of the WWW United and the GSSJC Program Department challenge girls to reach a total of 5,500 sets. Another 3,500 sets are still needed!

Troops interested in participating in this international service project should refer to instructions found on page 17 of the October 2003 issue of The Golden Link.

Donations of socks and chalk will continue throughout this membership year. Boards for painting can be obtained at Council. Contact Evelyn Vittone, jvittone@hal-pc.org or Program Manager Melinda Gaskill, 713-292-0232, mgaskill@sjgs.org.

New patch available
WWW United is thrilled with the response from the many girls and adults who have participated in this project by painting learning boards and collecting socks and chalk. The Council has a new patch available for purchase at the GSSJC shops for those who have participated in this international service project.

Members of History Committee travel to New York

Fourteen members of the History Committee recently attended a training workshop at the Edith Macy Conference Center sponsored by Girl Scouts of the USA’s National Historic Preservation Center. Cindy Costales and Betty Husband were sent by Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council. The other 12 attendees were self-supported. All of them came back with new ideas, new knowledge, and lots of enthusiasm for Girl Scout history.
