Adventures of the Elements game debuts Daisy card
for registering Girl Scout members

Are you looking for an activity full of adventure, knowledge about science, and problem-solving skills? Here it is. Adventures of the Elements is a game to help students, second grade and up, grasp the periodic table and learn more about math and science in a fun way.

The object of the game is to develop a strategy to dominate your opponents in an atomic battle. Players hold cards of their element guardians and play them to defend against evil molecules and elements.

Girls like card games. These girls take time out of their camping experience to play a card game in their cabin.

A card named “Daisy,” after Girl Scout founder Juliette Low, will be featured as a character card and given to girls who register or reregister at a recruitment event this membership year. This is a collector’s card and the first card in the Girl Scout series. It will also have information on Girl Scouts on the card. There are plans for a new Girl Scout card each year.

Creator Richard Johnson, an Eagle Scout and Beaumont native, will also design an element card for girls to use in the game. He has not decided what element this card will represent or how it will look.

At this year’s Membership Development Conference, Johnson gave a presentation on the Adventures of the Elements game and hosted a booth where conference participants could play the card game.
Packs of cards are available in the Girl Scout Shop at the Girl Scout Center, in Barnes and Noble stores, as well as the Texas Energy Museum in

downtown Beaumont. Packs will be available at the Beaumont Girl Scout Shop when the shop reopens this fall.

Schools in Beaumont are implementing this game in the second and third grade science and math classrooms.

“I have enjoyed teaching my young son the science that goes along with the game,” said Beaumont Membership Manager Alex DeRienzi.

Girls enjoy math and science at GEMS

Over 2,000 Girl Scouts, family, and friends filled Reliant Hall on June 3 for GEMS, a fun-filled event to explore math and science in a relaxed environment.

Girls traveled from booth to booth trying their skills at experiments, playing games, and visiting with vendors. Favorite activities included a cookie box tower building competition, science magic shows at a troop booth, and performances by the Green Starlettes drill team.

GEMS had been a popular event in the 1980s, but had not been held for more than a decade. Volunteer Dorothy Goodykoontz and her committee spent over a year finding a way to bring back the event and make it even better.
