SPURS Training Information

SPURS (Super People Using Riding Skills) training is offered to Girl Scouts who are 13 years old or in the 7th Grade and above and adults who are interested in learning more about horses and helping with the Equitation Program at Camp Misty Meadows. Attending one Theory Workshop (classroom session) and the Saturday day training at Camp Misty Meadows is required for participation in the SPURS program. At camp they will receive hands-on practice with the horses.

Adults taking this training will receive their theory at camp. All adults wishing to take this training MUST follow the same registration procedure as the girls.

Since the training at Camp Misty Meadows is an all-day workshop, all trainees should bring a sack lunch and beverage, clearly labeled with the attendee’s name. Small personal coolers are okay; large ice chests cannot be accommodated due to space restrictions.
For theory workshop date, please indicate your first and second choice. Unless notified otherwise, attend your first choice date.

Program Aide Core Training in a box

Leaders/advisors of Girl Scouts who are in seventh grade and above can use the newly developed Program Aide Core Training Box to complete the first step of the national Girl Scouts of the USA’s Girl Leadership Project. Volunteers had the girls in mind when they developed an easy-to-deliver format that is both fun and informative for girls! The best part is leaders can train girls in their troop on their schedule: at troop meetings, service unit events, or camping weekends! Once girls have completed the 6-hour core training, they’ll be eligible to attend a 4-hour Specialty training to complete the second part of the GSUSA Program Aide training, and purchase the GSUSA Program Aide Pin at any Girl Scout Shop.

The Core training is now divided into six 45-minute activity sessions in game format. The training box includes: key materials, facilitator instructions, a list of needed items, and materials to be printed for the girls. The 15 minutes between sessions is a great informal learning time for the girls to react to what they’ve learned and process the new knowledge they’ve discovered.

The GSSJC Program Aide Core Training Box is available on a first-come, reserved basis. The box is reserved by a leader who completes the Program Box Reservation Form and sends it to the Program Department. Due to the popularity of this resource, no drop-in requests will be honored. A nonrefundable fee for checkout is $10. In addition, a $25 check as a security deposit is required. Because of the high demand, maximum checkout time is one month. The security deposit will be forfeited if the one-month time limit is exceeded.

Program Aide specialty trainings

Program Aide specialty trainings are 4-hour sessions that focus on specific individual areas of interest, such as: Outdoor Games, Ceremonies, Story-telling, Outdoor Skills, Day Camp, and other topics.

Refer to the Council Information Network (CIN) found on www.gssjc.org and The Golden Link during the year for dates/times/locations of these Program Aide specialty trainings offered throughout the geographic boundaries of San Jacinto Council.

Girl must be registered Girl Scouts in seventh grade or above and have completed Program Aide Core Training. Girls attending specialty trainings must be present for the entire 4-hour session, and all girls must bring a completed permission slip (GSSJC form F-204) and medical history (GSSJC form F-185); girls without the necessary paperwork will not be allowed to participate.
Adults – Would you like to facilitate Program Aide specialty trainings? The Program Department is taking applications for Program Department facilitators. This is an opportunity to have fun working with girls and at the same time, helping them learn new skills and gain greater self-confidence. Once your application is received and reviewed and you’ve completed a brief home study training, you’ll be eligible to deliver training in one or more of the Program Aide specialty areas. In addition, your girl training skills can be applied to helping deliver other Program Department sessions including: Program Aide Core training and other girl leadership training opportunities as they are developed.

To become a Program Department facilitator, complete GSSJC Form F-456 and mail or fax it as instructed on the application.
