Leanna named 2004 Girl Scout Gold Award Young Woman of Distinction

GSSJC Gold Award recipient Leanna was selected by Girl Scouts of the USA as one of the ten Girl Scout Gold Award recipients whose project represented the best efforts in Girl Scouting. Leanna’s project “Bringing Books to Bremond” was the result of reading a small article in a local newspaper about a group of people in Bremond, TX forming a committee to establish a “first ever” library committee in their little community of 830 people.

Leanna contacted the president of the Bremond Library Committee with the thought of helping collect books. In her initial contact Leanna learned what they really wanted to do is establish a charter to become part of the Central Texas Library System. A building to house the library had been acquired and they had already collected 3,500 books. Through her advertising efforts at several churches and organizations, to date Leanna has sorted, cataloged and delivered over 6,300 books.

As a direct result of Leanna’s efforts, the Bremond Library has received a three-year provisional membership from the Central Texas Library System.

In March, Leanna traveled to Washington, D.C. at GSUSA’s expense to be honored with the other nine recipients from throughout the country.

This is also a great honor for Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council because it is the third year in a row for one of GSSJC’s Gold Award recipients to be chosen for this national honor.
