TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME Girls and boys grades K-8 can win their T-ball, softball, or baseball team the opportunity of a lifetime–the chance to take batting practice at Minute Maid Park. The Astros in Action Foundation is sponsoring the Field of Dreams Day Essay Contest. Children are asked to write a short essay on “Why My T-Ball/Baseball/Softball Team Should Be Selected to Take Part in the Field of Dreams Day.” Only one entry is allowed per child. NASA JOHNSON SPACE CENTER will sponsor the Engineering Career Expo 2004 for Girl Scouts, middle school and high school students, and local community college students. The event is from 6 - 9 p.m. Thursday, April 15 at Space Center Houston. Representatives from universities with engineering programs, private sector companies that work with NASA, NASA engineers, and co-op students will be there with booths, literature, demonstrations, and to answer questions. Astronaut Bonnie Dunbar and NASA engineer Jack Bacon will be keynote speakers for the evening. The event is free and no registration is required. SAFETY AWARDS PROGRAM The Youth Division of the National Safety Council publicly recognizes significant activities by individuals (youth and adults), youth groups, and youth-serving organizations that carry out safety and health program and activities designed to keep people safe on the road, at work, on the farm, at school, at home, and at play. Awards are based on the written information presented and supporting information. The deadline to submit your Girl Scout project for an award is June 1. Your project must have been completed within two years prior to June 1, 2004. For information visit www.nsc.org or call 630-285-1121.

CALLING GIRL SCOUTS Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate in M. D. Anderson’s snnual SPRINT FOR LIFE® on May 1. Choose from the 5K run, the 5K walk, or the Sprint for Sprouts kids run! This special event gets under way at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, May 1 in the Texas Medical Center. Free parking is available! Cheer along the race course! Run or walk as an individual. Even though Girl Scouts as a group cannot raise money for other organizations, troop members can register and participate as individuals.
Troop may serve as volunteers. Troops can help coordinate and serve water at a water station! Time spent volunteering can be counted as service hours. Check your Girl Scout handbook to find out how to apply participation toward fulfilling requirements. For information on volunteering, call Valerie James at 713-792-2765.

GENTLY USED GIRL AND ADULT UNIFORMS are needed to re-supply the uniform checkout program available at the Girl Scout Center. Bring girl and adult uniforms to the Girl Scout Center or give to your membership manager to deliver. If your troop is in need of loaner uniforms, contact Celeste Byrant at

Log on to the Council Information Network, www.gssjc.org, to see what’s new in January. Just in time for Thinking Day in February, service unit administrators will find information on international games, crafts, and ceremonies to share at service unit meetings. There will also be helpful hints on first aid and safety. Leaders will find updates on program offerings.

EARN THE PAW PALS PATCH The Houston SPCA debuts the “Paw Pals” Girl Scout Patch Program. Girl Scouts will focus on these age appropriate topics: Respecting our Animal Friends (Daisies and Brownies), Pet Safety (Juniors), Encouraging Humane Treatment of Companion Animals (Cadettes and Seniors). Call 713-869-7722 ext. 143, or e-mail education@hspca.org at the humane education department to request a free copy of the program and to schedule visits. Shelter tours are available by appointment Monday through Friday. Patches are purchased directly from the Houston SPCA upon completion of the program.

GIRL SCOUTS ARE NEEDED to help place flags at the Houston National Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 30 for the upcoming Memorial Day Ceremony. The cemetery is located at 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive in Houston. For information call 281-447-8686, ext. 200. The Memorial Day Ceremony will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 31.

FAMILY CAMPING Families can travel to Garrison, near Nacogdoches, to go swimming, canoeing, hiking, star gazing, or relax at our Council’s Camp Whispering Pines. Cost is only $20 per cabin for the entire weekend. For information contact George Ann Barrett at 713-292-0313 or gbarrett@sjgs.org.
