TEXAS BOATER EDUCATION COURSE
(Ages 13 up and adults)
This is a State of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department certified Texas Boater Education Course. Girls will learn about mandatory boating safety rules and responsibilities, navigation rules, boating emergencies, personal water craft safety, trailering, boat types, and boat operation. A person between the ages of 13 and 16 years or born after September 1, 1984, cannot operate a windblown vessel over 14 feet in length, a motorboat with more than 15 horsepower, or personal water craft with more than 10 horsepower unless they have taken the boater education course in Texas. Adults interested in refreshing their memory in the rules and regulations are also encouraged to take this class.

These are the specialty course offerings the girls need to take in order to earn their Program Aide Bar. The Program Aide Core course is offered just prior to these specialty courses. This course will enable program aides to assist instructors teaching the various Red Cross canoeing, sailing, and swimming courses, as well as helping where needed at an aquatic event with proper supervisory personnel. If you assist at a later date with a registered Red Cross course, you may also earn the Red Cross Instructor Aide certificate for that particular specialty.

FLOAT YOUR BOAT 101
(Adults wishing to learn more about the Girl Scout aquatic programs swimming, sailing, and canoeing.)
This course is for adults wishing to have first hand working knowledge of what it takes for Girl Scouts and adults to become involved in the Girl Scout aquatic program.

You will be taken through the steps of how to prepare your troop and adults to sail at Camp Casa Mare. Information on sailing at Camp Casa Mare, the often confusing sailing ratings, who is a Mariner, requirements to go sailing for girls and/or adults, and troop sailing on the Council boats based off site. Tour of the sailing facilities and seeing the program in action.

Canoeing will be another venue looked at. Canoeing progressions, how to make arrangements to canoe on and off Council property, requirements for adults and/or girls to actually canoe. Seeing the actual canoes and learning what equipment is available will be helpful in making your plans to canoe.

As with all these activities, swimming requirements can be a mystery. How to get swim cards and GSSJC safe boating test certificates, who needs them, what each

certificate requires will be questions answered. Lifeguards and pool watchers are mandatory at all aquatic events, so helpful hints on how to acquire or become certified will be included. Bring your questions and come learn about all the aquatic programs the Council has to offer.

SWIM STROKE WORKSHOPS
(Levels III-V only, girls ages 8 and up)
Now is the time to get those Red Cross swim cards at summers end when you have been brushing up on your skills all summer long. Swimming stroke workshops are for girls, ages 8 and over to earn ARC Learn to Swim certification. Write age of girl on registration form. Swimming ability is tested and Red Cross is issued at the end of the day based on skill, proficiency, and endurance of the participant. This is not a teaching course. Students will be tested on all skills up to and including the new level of certification. The GSSJC Safe Boating

test is given only if the participants bring clean shoes and shirt and long pants for the test. Girls need Level III to canoe and Level IV to sail. (They MUST be 11 years old & in 6th grade to sail). Portions of the Junior Water Fun & Swimming badges and the Water Sports Interest Project are completed by taking this workshop. We will use the new modified criteria for the revamped Red Cross swimming levels.
