| The following GSSJC Sailing Ratings
are enhanced ratings or progressions are for those girls who
have earned the ARC Basic Sailing, GSSJC Seaman, or Small
Craft Safety–Sailing certificates. All ratings are offered
once in the spring and once in the fall starting in August.
Optional activities will be provided for Mariners who have
taken the theory segment of the following ratings. If you
are unsure of what to take next, check the rating chart on

SUNFISH MATE and SAILING FUNdamentals
RATINGS
(girls ages 11 and up and adults)
This class will begin training for Mariners of for those who
have satisfactorily completed ARC Basic Sailing or GSSJC Seaman
Rating or ARC Small Craft Safety-Sailing who wish to become
more proficient on sailboats such as the Sunfish. The Sailing
FUNdamentals Rating will reinforce the sailing theory learned
in Basic Sailing adding a variety of other topics of interest
to the sailor wanting to expand their sailing knowledge and
abilities. The Sunfish Mate Rating will let the Mariner work
on perfecting their skills while sailing solo on a Sunfish
as well as learning how to do simple maintenance.
PREREQUISITE:

better
- GSSJC Safe Boating test
- Competent sailing skills - Girls should
have two weekends of practice after taking Basic Sailing
before attempting this rating.

BASIC SAILING
The Red Cross Basic Sailing course includes, both
theory and water skills. It covers sailing theory,
boat parts, right of way rules, some navigation,
and the practical experience of getting on the
water and learning how to sail. Everyone who enters
this course must pass the Safe Boating Test. This
course is taught over two weekends. You MUST attend
both weekends. This is a difficult class. Don’t
be discouraged if you don’t pass the first
time you take it.

SUNFISH SKIPPER and PERFORMANCE SAILING
(girls ages 11 up with proper sailing rating and service
hour prerequisites)
This class will enhance training for those Mariners
who have completed previous ratings and service hours
who wish to become a skipper on the Sunfish. The Performance
Sailing rating will enhance the principles of sailing
and its components. Girls will learn more about navigation
and weather. Charting a course will be one challenge.
While earning Sunfish Skipper rating, girls will expand
their skills while develop good helmsmanship. Learning
to sail a Marconi rigged boat or small sloop with just
the main sail will give the Sunfish Skipper a new experience.

SLOOP CREW
(girls ages 11 and up with proper sailing rating and service
hour prerequisites)
Those Mariners who have completed the prerequisite ratings
and service hours may sign up to learn how to crew on
a small camp sloop. This course teaches Mariners how to
rig and crew a small sloop. This course will teach how
to rig, de-rig, and crew a small sloop. Learn how to properly
use a jub sail, proper maintenance and care of the sloops,
and the use of the various lines on the boat. Crew responsibilities
