Enhanced Ratings - Instruction Weekends

Enhanced ratings or progressions for those girls/adults who have earned their Red Cross Basic Sailing or Small Craft Safety–Sailing certificates are offered each fall and spring. All ratings are offered once in the spring and once in the fall starting in August.
Note: For those Mariners who have taken the theory segment of the following ratings, optional activities will be provided.

Sunfish Mare and Sailing FUNdamentals Ratings

This class will begin training for Mariners or for those who have satisfactorily completed Basic Sailing or GSSJC Seaman Rating or Small Craft Safety–Sailing who wish to become more proficient on sailboats such as the Sunfish. These two ratings are the prerequisites for many other ratings. The Sailing FUNdamentals Rating will reinforce the sailing theory learned in Basic Sailing adding a variety of other topics of interest to sailors wanting to expand their sailing knowledge and abilities. The Sunfish Mate Rating will let Mariners work on perfecting their skills while sailing solo on a Sunfish as well as learning how to do simple maintenance.

Prerequisite:

Sailing: ARC Basic Sailing Certificate OR GSSJC Seaman OR ARC Small Craft Safety–Sailing
Competent sailing skills ( 2-3 weekends on the water sailing practice time is needed AFTER completing ARC Basic Sailing or ARC Small Craft Safety–Sailing before attempting this rating.
Swim: Girls: Level IV swim card or equivalent or better AND
GSSJC Safe Boating test
Note: NO Safe Boating Tests will be administered at camp; however, ALL participants must satisfactorily complete the Red Cross small craft swim test at the beginning of the event.
Bring copies of your certificates with you to camp.

Sloop Captain

This class will enhance training for Mariners who have completed previous ratings and service hours who wish to captain one of the camp-based sloops. This rating is the prerequisites for many other ratings. While earning Sloop Captain, you will expand on your sailing skills while learning how to fly the boats Spinnaker.

30 hours of service to the Sailing Program

Prerequisites for the following ratings classes are: ARC Basic Sailing Certificate OR GSSJC Seaman OR ARC Small Craft Safety-Sailing; GSSJC Sunfish Mate Rating; GSSJC Sailing Fundamentals Rating; GSSJC Safe Boating Test; ARC Level IV swim card or equivalent or beter. Look at each rating for any additional prerequisites.

Bring to all classes: copies of all certificates ; read prior to class ARC Start Sailing Right, or ARC Small Craft Safety; and previous ratings notebook.

Sunfish Skipper and Performance Sailing

This class will enhance training for those Mariners who have completed previous ratings and service hours who wish to become a skipper on the Sunfish. These two ratings are the prerequisites for many other ratings. The Performance Sailing rating will further enhance the principles of sailing and its components. You will learn more about navigation and weather. Charting a course will be one challenge. While earning Sunfish Skipper you will expand on your skills while developing good helmsman ship and learning how to sail well. Learning to sail a Marconi rigged boat or small sloop with just the main sail will give the Sunfish Skipper a new experience.

Prerequisite: GSSJC Program Aide Core and 10 hours of service to the Sailing program

Sloop Crew

Those Mariners who have completed the prerequisite ratings and service hours may sign up to learn how to crew on a small camp sloop. This course will teach Mariners how to rig, de-rig, and crew a small sloop. They will also learn how to properly use a jib sail, proper maintenance and care of the sloops, and the use of the various lines on the boat. Crew responsibilities will be included.

Prerequisite: 10 hours of service to the Sailing program

Sloop Skipper and Performance Sailing

This class will enhance training for Mariners who have completed previous ratings and service hours who wish to become a skipper on our small sloops based at camp. These two ratings are the prerequisites for many other ratings. The Performance Sailing rating will further enhance the principles of sailing and its components. You will learn more about navigation and weather. Charting a course will be one challenge. While earning Sloop Skipper, you will expand on your skills while learning your responsibilities of skippering your ship.

Big Boat Crew Rating and Sailing FUNdamentals Ratings

This class will begin training for Mariners or for those who have satisfactorily completed ARC Basic Sailing or GSSJC Seaman Rating or ARC Small Craft Safety–Sailing who wish to become more proficient on sailboats such as the big keeled boats or sloops based at the Marina off camp. These two ratings are the prerequisites for many other ratings. The Sailing FUNdamentals Rating will reinforce the sailing theory learned in Basic Sailing adding a variety of other topics of interest to the sailor wanting to expand their sailing knowledge and abilities. The Big Boat Crew Rating will let the Mariner work on perfecting their skills while crewing on the “big boats” (keeled sloops) as well as learning how to do simple maintenance.
