Backpacking

Girl Scout backpacking groups have monthly weekend trips from October to April and sometimes organize a summer trip. Backpacking groups are a great way for novice backpackers to gain skills by learning from experienced backpackers, and it’s an excellent way for both experienced and novice backpackers to meet more people who share the same interests and love for the outdoors. Don’t have all the necessary backpack equipment for group weekend trips? No worries. Arrangements can be made to rent equipment at the Girl Scout Center through a backpacking group coordinator. Don’t worry if you might be the only girl in your troop or a Juliette who might be interested in backpacking. You won’t be the only one! Sign up for an orientation and join the fun! For more backpacking information contact at Deban Becker 713-292-0203 or dbecker@sjgs.org.

Canoeing

Spring Canoe Training 2004
Here is a chance to learn about canoeing at Camps Arnold, Robinwood, and Whispering Pines. Participants can choose between two courses: Fundamentals of Canoeing or Fundamentals of Canoeing Review.

FOC (Fundamentals of Canoeing)
The Red Cross Fundamentals of Canoeing course covers the basics for canoeing, including introduction to the sport, equipment, boating safety basic techniques, strokes, and rescues. This course teaches students to be safe on and around the water while learning to canoe in a flat water environment. It teaches self-rescue skills and rescue of others. This is the first step for girls to take if they would like to participate in canoe trips.
Prerequisite: Girls must have a Red Cross Level III swim card or equivalent and GSSJC Safe Boating Test. Adults must be comfortable in deep water and pass the Safe Boating Test

FOC Review (Fundamentals of Canoeing Review – Enhanced Skills)
Do you want to perfect your canoeing skills and become an excellent paddler? This course provides girls and adults with the skills to teach younger girls the basic strokes for canoeing and to feel prepared to take a canoeing trip off Girl Scout property. Students will have the chance to solo canoe and work one-on-one with an instructor on any weak canoeing skills. This is a great course to become an efficient paddler!
Prerequisite: Girls and adults must have Red Cross Fundamentals of Canoeing card.
