Department declares Socks and Chalk service project a success

by Evelyn Vittone

More than 70 troops and groups took part in GSSJC’s international service project with WWW United, Inc. The project’s objective is to create small chalkboards to donate to children around the world who have no paper or pencils. See the information on February Council Information Network (www.gssjc.org).

Girls have participated in painting learning boards and donating white socks and chalk. Since October over 3,100 boards have been checked out from Council for painting; many have already been returned and more are being completed as troops finish their plans for this spring. Hundreds of pairs of socks and boxes of chalk have also been donated with the boards.

Because WWW United continues to ship the boards both to Afghanistan and Iraq, the project will continue throughout the summer with some day camps and resident camps pitching in to paint boards and collect white socks and chalk.

All participants in the project, either those who donated chalk and/or white socks

or painted the learning boards, may purchase the new WWW United, Inc. Learning Boards™ patch.

WWW United, Inc. has asked that girls write letters to be shipped overseas with the boards. If your girls took part in this project, consider having them handwrite short, large block print letters to someone in school overseas who might be getting the boards. Keep it upbeat, general (no names), and filled with a message of worldwide friendship. Letters can be mailed or delivered to GSSJC, Melinda Gaskill, 3110 Southwest Freeway, Houston, TX 77098, with the envelope marked “WWW United Notes.”
