Kimberly B.
removed two old flowerbeds and rebuilt four new flowerbeds out of
donated landscape timbers at Boy Scout Camp Strake. She also replanted
natural plants and flowers, and she put in soaker hoses to make it easier
to water the beds. Then, she put mulch down to finish off the beds.
Megan H. and Nicole
H. handcrafted 50 Christmas stockings and filled them with donated
toys, books and toiletries. Then, they donated the stockings to children
residing at the Mission of Yahweh shelter.
Betsy H. helped
birds of the Houston area have homes in the growing urban area and educated
girls about birds' needs. She went to several troops and talked about
birds and how to help them. The girls then built birdhouses or bird feeders.
The girls took the houses home to put up or the houses were hung up in
city parks as part of the Houston Migratory Bird Project.
Meredith R. held
a badge workshop for bridging Brownies and Juniors . Girls had the opportunity
to learn the qualities of a good citizen while earning the United We Stand
and Ms. President badges. The girls went to several different stations
to earn badge requirements, played games, and sang songs. |
Reylin E. held
an 8-hour workshop at the Art Institute of Houston. During the event,
girls were able to earn the Creative Cooking Patch by learning about nutrition
and cooking within an industrial-size kitchen. Then, they cooked a lunch
with the guidance of professional chefs.
Rebecca H. created
a touch cart program that gave people the opportunity to see and touch
various items collected from the animals that live at the Ellen Trout
Zoo. She collected teeth, hair, and bones. Other cart items included products
made from animal skins and diets of zoo animals. She shared her cart with
680 people.
Katie H. organized
and hosted a Christian concert at Epiphany of the Lord church. Food and
drinks were provided as well as two live Christian bands. The entrance
fee for the concert was canned food that was donated to Katy Christian
Ministries.
Sara R. held
a badge workshop for Juniors to earn the Ms. President Badge. Girls learned
about women in leadership positions and were encouraged to get involved
in government. Activities included making campaign posters and dressing
up as famous women while telling other girls about them. Her local Houston
Councilwoman Addie Wiseman came to speak at the event.

Iliana G. transferred
children's books onto tape. She also collected books, tapes, headphones,
and batteries to benefit Texas Children's Hospital, Bellaire Methodist
Daycare, and Bellaire Presbyterian. She also spent two months at each
of these facilities, reading stories to the children.
Laura K. provided
toiletries for the Casa Juan Diego shelter. She sewed personal bags for
60 people at the shelter to hold the toiletries. She wanted to do this
project to show the women and children of the shelter that there are people
who care and want them to make their day
Victoria K. started
a book club at the Rosemont Assisted Living home. Once a week during the
summer she read with the residents. The book she chose was "The
Great Gatsby." She chose this project because she had been involved
with the Book Club at Kingwood High School and knew what it took to make
it a success.
Genevieve T. hosted
a craft and entertainment session at the SunBridge Rehabilitation Facility
for four weeks. This helped the residents to interact socially, develop
hand-eye coordination, and have a good time. Some of her friends helped
the residents make quilts for military troops and provide music and dance
entertainment. |
